My Journey to God

To a Protestant Friend

You say it is not necessary
That you should tell your sins
To a man.
You speak directly to God.
Perhaps.

But I prefer my way.
After I talk to the priest
I hear God’s voice answering.
Sometimes he has a high tenor voice
Like my Italian pastor.
Other times it’s a deep bass
Like that retired priest who fills in.

It is a real voice,
Not some vague inner voice.
He tells me he knows
I am not perfect,
Saying, “If I wanted you perfect
I would have made you so.
I want you to be happy
And I will show you the way.”
